There are five active sludge thickeners (diameter: 120m) in Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, which are responsible for dewatering of the waste pulp from flotation plants. Prior to this project, tailing Thickeners #3, #4, and #5 had been included in the developmental projects of the National Iranian Copper Industries Company (NICICO) and had been enhanced and converted to High Rate Thickeners (HRT).

The current project aimed to increase the capacity of tailing Thickeners #1 and #2 through converting them to HRTs. Modifications were also made to Sludge Thickener #4 to increase its capacity. The completion of this project doubled the capacity of tailing Thickeners #1 and #2.
